InternationalDayofPeaceSeptember21stIn1981theUnitedNationsGeneralAssemblypassedresolution36/67declaringanInternationalDayofPeace.In2001,theUnitedNationsGeneralAssemblyadoptedanewresolution55/282declaring21SeptemberofeachyearastheInternationalDayofPeace.
TheAssemblydeclaredthattheDaybeobservedasadayofglobalceasefireandnon-violence,aninvitationtoallnationsandpeopletohonouracessationofhostilitiesduringtheDay.ItinvitedallMemberStates,organizationsoftheUnitedNationssystem,regionalandnon-governmentalorganizationsandindividualstocommemoratetheDayinanappropriatemanner,includingthrougheducationandpublicawareness,andtocooperatewiththeUnitedNationsinestablishingaglobalceasefire.PeaceDayforYoungPeopleattheUnitedNationsSince1997,theWorldPeacePrayerSocietyhasassistedtheUnitedNationsDepartmentofPublicInformationinproducingaprogramforNewYorkschoolchildrenatUNHeadquarters,includingaWorldPeaceFlagCeremony.
OnSept.23,20XX,thisprogramincludedgreetingsbyMrs.NaneAnnan,UnderSecretary-GeneralShashiTharoor,andavideoconferencewithchildreninfivecountriesthathadrecentlyexperiencedwar.InternationalDayofPeaceVigilThegoaloftheInternationalDayofPeaceVigilis:"Toencouragetheobservationofaworldwide,grassroots24-hourvigilforpeaceandnonviolenceontheInternationalDayofPeace,Sunday,21September,ineveryhouseofworshipandplaceofspiritualpractice,byallreligiousandspirituallybasedgroupsandindividuals,andbyallmen,womenandchildrenwhoseekpeaceintheworld."ThisVigilismeanttodemonstratethepowerofprayerandotherspiritualobservancesinpromotingpeaceandpreventingviolentconflict.Supportthisworldwideinitiativebycommittingtoholda24-hourvigilon21September.TheWorldPeaceFestivalCelebratingttheInternationalDayofPeaceThisyear,theannualWorldPeaceFestivalinAmenia,NY,willbeheldonSunday,September21,20XX.
TheFestival,alwaysajoyfulmulti-culturalgatheringofmusicanddance,activitiesforchildren,andamagnificentWorldPeacePrayerCeremonywiththeflagsofallnations,willserveasafocalpointforfestivitiesworldwidehonoringtheInternationalDayofPeace.
