  ThefirstArborDaytookplaceonApril10,1872inNebraska.ItwasthebrainchildofJuliusSterlingMorton(1832-1902),aNebraskajournalistandpoliticianoriginallyfromMichigan.Throughouthislongandproductivecareer,MortonworkedtoimproveagriculturaltechniquesinhisadoptedstateandthroughouttheUnitedStateswhenheservedasPresidentGroverClevelandsSecretaryofAgriculture.ButhismostimportantlegacyisArborDay.

  Morton(photo,right)feltthatNebraskaslandscapeandeconomywouldbenefitfromthewide-scaleplantingoftrees.Hesetanexamplehimselfplantingorchards,shadetreesandwindbreaksonhisownfarmandheurgedhisneighbourstofollowsuit.Mortonsrealopportunity,though,arrivedwhenhebecameamemberofNebraskasstateboardofagriculture.Heproposedthataspecialdaybesetasidededicatedtotreeplantingandincreasingawarenessoftheimportanceoftrees.NebraskasfirstArborDaywasanamazingsuccess.Morethanonemilliontreeswereplanted.AsecondArborDaytookplacein1884andtheyoungstatemadeitanannuallegalholidayin1885,usingApril22ndtocoincidewithMortonsbirthday.

  IntheyearsfollowingthatfirstArborDay,MortonsideaspreadbeyondNebraskawithKansas,Tennessee,MinnesotaandOhioallproclaimingtheirownArborDays.Todayall50statescelebrateArborDayalthoughthedatesmayvaryinkeepingwiththelocalclimate.(StateArborDays)Atthefederallevel,in1970,PresidentRichardNixonproclaimedthelastFridayinAprilasNationalArborDay.ArborDayisalsonowcelebratedinothercountriesincludingAustralia.VariationsarecelebratedasGreeningWeekofJapan,TheNewYearsDaysofTreesinIsrael,TheTree-lovingWeekofKorea,TheReforestationWeekofYugoslavia,TheStudentsAfforestationDayofIcelandandTheNationalFestivalofTreePlantinginIndia.JuliusSterlingMortonwouldbeproud.Sometimesonegoodideacanmakearealdifference.
