Adolescentsfromlow-incomefamiliesinparticulararemorelikelythantheirmiddle-classpeerstounderachieveandtodropoutofschool.Studieshaveshownthatapositiveattitudetowardsschoolworkandthesupportandencouragementfromtheirparentscanhelpat-riskyoungsterstoovercometheeconomicbarriersandlackofresourcestheyface.Mostoftheevidenceabouttheeffectsofparentalinvolvementcomesfromresearchonmothers.Littleisknown,however,abouthowadolescentsexperiencetheirfathers’warmthandthebeliefsandbehaviorsthataremostaffectedbyit.
Thisnewstudyispartofalargeronefocusingonlow-incomefamiliesconductedinfourmiddleschoolsinthesouthwesternUnitedStates.Datawereanalyzedfromquestionnairescompletedby183sixth-gradersabouthowoptimisticandmotivatedtheywereabouttheirschoolwork,andhowtheyexperiencedtheirfathers.ThequestionnaireswerecompletedprimarilybyrespondentsofMexicanAmerican,AfricanAmericanandEuropeanAmericandescent.Theirmathsandlanguageartsgradeswerealsoobtained.
Theirfindingsshowhowfatherscansupporttheirteenagersinwaysthatresultingreateroptimism,self-efficacy,and,ultimately,higherachievementatschool.
Thesepositiveeffectsextendtobothsonsanddaughters,whileindifferentways.Experiencingtheirfather’swarmthfirstinfluencesdaughters’senseofoptimism,andthenspillsoverintotheirfeelingmoredeterminedandcertainabouttheiracademicabilities.Thisinturnleadstobettermathgrades.Thereisamoredirectlinkbetweentheirfathers’involvementandteenageboys’beliefintheirabilitytosucceedontheacademicfront.Thisheightenedself-confidenceincreasedtheirsuccessinEnglishlanguageartsclasses.
